What changed with Sora
OpenAI closed the Sora web and app experience on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API followed on September 24, 2026 (The Decoder). Many people who used to type “make me a video” into ChatGPT now get text, a script or an image instead.
ChatGPT can still make videos, but it now does it through connected tools: apps and MCP connectors that a video product runs. ChatGPT plans and writes; the connected tool builds and renders the video.
Two kinds of video you can make from ChatGPT
| You want | What to connect | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Launch videos, product demos, titles, motion graphics | A motion graphics tool with an MCP server, such as ASAP Motion | An editable project with your text, screens and brand, exported as MP4 |
| Cinematic footage, scenes that look filmed | A generative video tool with a ChatGPT app or connector | Generated clips |
If your video needs your exact words, your logo and real screenshots, you want the first kind: generated footage is poor at exact text and real interfaces.
Connect ASAP Motion to ChatGPT
ASAP Motion runs a remote MCP server, included on Pro and Studio:
https://studio.asapmotion.co/mcp
- In ChatGPT’s settings, open Apps and connectors and turn on developer mode (custom connectors need it).
- Create a connector, paste the server URL, choose OAuth, and sign in with your ASAP Motion account.
- In a new chat, enable the ASAP Motion connector.
The MCP server page has the same steps for Claude, Cursor, Codex and Claude Code.
Make the first video
Ask for one thing and ask to review before it builds:
Use ASAP Motion to make a 30-second launch video for https://yourproduct.com.
Show me the storyboard first.
ChatGPT reads your site through ASAP Motion’s launch tools, writes the story beat by beat, and shows you the storyboard. Change anything in plain words, then say “Build it.” Building runs as a job, and ChatGPT follows it until the project is ready, then can export an MP4 with download links.
Fix it without starting over
What ChatGPT built is a normal ASAP Motion project, so you have two ways to change it:
- Ask in the chat: “Change the headline in scene 2 to ‘Ship faster’ and export again.”
- Open it in the browser: edit any text, screen or timing by hand in the ASAP Motion editor.
This is the main difference from prompting a video model: you change one scene, and everything else stays exactly as it was.
Good first prompts
- “Make a 15-second vertical teaser for our new feature, using the three screenshots I’m uploading.”
- “Start from an ASAP Motion launch template and put our product name, colors and screenshots in it.”
- “Open my last ASAP Motion project and make a 1:1 version for LinkedIn.”
Limits worth knowing
- Plans: the ASAP Motion connector needs Pro or Studio; exports use your plan’s limits and credits, as in the web app.
- Long tasks: building and exporting take time and run as jobs. If ChatGPT stops waiting, ask it to check the job again.
- Your own files: ChatGPT can bring in images and video from a public link, or ASAP Motion gives you a page to drop files on.
- What it makes: designed motion graphics (type, screens, shapes, logos), not filmed-looking footage.
